Fine-tuning the art of piano-making with Paolo and Luca Fazioli

To the many sounds you’d expect to be produced by a forest, consider including this: the sound of the piano. The majestic “red spruce” growing in the Val di Fiemme of Italy’s Dolomites has been prized by instrument makers for centuries.

SALT LAKE CITY—Utah’s Rick Baldassin is world-renowned among pianists, symphony directors, and piano makers for his innovations and contributions to the technical world of pianos. And for four years running, he and his wife, Cindy, co-founders of Baldassin Pianos, have provided the piano that appears on stage to accompany soloists in Shen Yun Performing Arts‘ production in Salt Lake City.

BYU Students Participate in ‘Remote’ Piano Classes Using Yamaha Disklavier Technology

EUGENE, ORE. AND PROVO, UTAH—The University of Oregon and Brigham Young University (BYU) conducted joint piano master classes this month, even though the teachers and students at each school were more than 800 miles apart.

The 7’6” Bechstein grand piano (made in Berlin in 1932) that is currently being restored by Rick Baldassin of Baldassin Pianos has completely new action and new strings. Today, University of Utah piano professor Viktor Valkov kindly came to Rick’s shop to test out the overall response and playability of the piano. We think it sounds pretty grand!! Rick will be putting the final touches on the piano, and then it will be shipped via truck to Florida, and then via ship to Haiti by Royal Caribbean International!
